Flowers were once seen as a luxury with just a few carnations and some tired looking gyp used to adorn the buttonholes of the bridal party. But somewhere between the late 90's and now the bridal flowers have blossomed to become a staple, with more couple opting for floral table centers, venue decorations, and even mandaps. And with the registry service taking center stage with the other traditional ceremonies, its not just western brides that need bouquets, as Asian brides are blooming with ideas.

CHOOSING YOUR DREAM FLORIST
As with most of your other service providers, its vital you have a connection with your florist, someone who understands your needs and your vision, and most importantly can realise it within your budget.

When looking for your ideal florist there a few great places to start. If you've been to a wedding where you loved the arrangements, it’s worth speaking to the lucky couple to see who they used. Another option is to speak to your wedding venue, and ask them if they have a particular florist that they work with or can recommend. This is a really good option as the florist will know they venue well and will be able to give you some great ideas on what works and what doesn't.

Local florists are also an option that may be worth considering, as they do tend to work out cheaper, especially ones that are near to the wedding venue itself.

TOP TIPS
  • Once you've got your appointments booked with your florists, there are a few simple rules that you can follow:
  • Try to meet them on a quiet day if possible, as weekends and weeks with special occasions such Valentines Day or Mothers Day, will be difficult. You want to make sure that you have their undivided attention!
  • Take some cuttings or ideas or flowers, colours and looks that you like. If possible take with you a picture of your venue, hall or room, so that you can work out a really good colour scheme that compliments your look and the theme of the day.
  • If you don't know what the flowers are called don't worry! Any good florist will be able to show you examples of the flowers that they're talking about, without making you feel clueless.
  • Give your florist an idea of how much you want to spend and what you need the flowers for. Prioritise on what is more important to you because it will help the florist choose appropriate flowers according to your budget and needs. For example you may want a better quality for your haar or bouquet, which may mean cheaper flowers for the table centers or decor.
  • If you can't afford your initial ideas then ask your florist to come up with or show you examples of a cheaper alternative.
  • If you're having extra's such as bowls, candles, beads or other decorations, then ask for a breakdown of the cost, as they all add up. If items such as vases or candelabras are part of the design, do they come with the display or do you need to hire them yourself.
  • Once you've found the right person, then enquire on the payment method, as most require a deposit up front.
  • Clarify when and what time the flowers will be delivered or set up. Some bigger florists, sometimes don't do the set up themselves, they will send their staff, who are qualified to do the job for them. If you want them to be there, then you need to let them know.
  • Its also worth bearing in mind, that quality flowers do cost more but will look fresher and there's less chance of them wilting throughout the day.
  • Certain flowers will not be available at different times of the year. Always check with the florist, which blooms are in season. The availability may also determine the overall cost of your arrangements, as specially ordered flowers that are rarer during particular seasons will obviously cost more.
